Our Approach to Privacy
HICannabis.org is an educational site about medical cannabis in Hawaii. We believe cannabis patients and consumers deserve strong privacy protections — arguably stronger than most website visitors, given the ongoing federal prohibition and the sensitive nature of medical cannabis information.
Our privacy practices are simple: we collect almost nothing.
What We Collect
Cookies (Two)
We set a single age-verification cookie (hicannabis_age_verified) when you confirm you are 21 or older. This cookie lasts 30 days and prevents the age gate from appearing on every visit. That's it.
We also set a cookie consent cookie (hicannabis_cookie_consent) when you dismiss the cookie notice banner. This cookie lasts 365 days (one year) and simply records that you acknowledged our cookie use.
Both cookies are set via JavaScript on your device. They contain no personal information — just a simple flag indicating you confirmed your age or dismissed the banner.
Server Logs
Like all websites, our web server automatically logs basic request information (IP address, page visited, browser type, timestamp). These logs are used solely for security monitoring and are not shared with third parties.
What We Don't Do
- We do not use Google Analytics or any third-party analytics
- We do not use tracking pixels or retargeting
- We do not set any third-party cookies
- We do not sell, share, or trade any visitor data
- We do not collect email addresses, names, or personal information
- We do not have user accounts or registration
- We do not serve advertisements or participate in ad networks
- We do not use social media tracking widgets
External Links
HICannabis.org links to official government websites including the Hawaii Department of Health, eHawaii.gov, the Hawaii State Legislature, and other official sources. We also link to cannabis advocacy organizations and our companion sites. These external sites have their own privacy policies, and we encourage you to review them when visiting.
Third-Party CDN Services
We load the following resources from third-party CDNs for site functionality and design:
- Bootstrap CSS/JS from cdn.jsdelivr.net
- Bootstrap Icons from cdn.jsdelivr.net
- Google Fonts from fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com
These services may log standard HTTP request information (IP address, browser type, timestamp) per their own privacy policies. We chose CDN-hosted assets for performance and reliability; no user data is intentionally sent to these services beyond what standard HTTP requests include.
Data Retention
We do not maintain any user database. Server logs are retained for a limited period for security purposes and then deleted. The age-verification cookie expires after 30 days. The cookie consent cookie expires after one year.
Children's Privacy
HICannabis.org is intended exclusively for adults aged 21 and older. We do not knowingly collect any information from minors. The age-verification gate is designed to prevent access by those under 21.
Hawaii Privacy Considerations
Hawaii's constitution (Article I, Section 6) provides a right to privacy. Because we do not collect, store, or process personal information beyond basic server logs and two simple cookies, most data privacy law provisions do not require additional disclosures from us. If this ever changes, we will update this policy accordingly.
Changes to This Policy
If we ever change our privacy practices, we will update this page. We have no plans to add tracking, analytics, or advertising.
